Abstract
Rhei Rhizoma [Rheum palmatum] is an important herb in antiphlogistic, cathartic, antipyretic, anticoagulant and hemostatic prescriptions in Chinese medicine. The anticoagulative principle in the herb was isolated by a combination of partition, fractional precipitation and column chromatography on silica gel. In the isolation process, plasma recalcification time in mice was useful for following the anticoagulative activity of the material. The anticoagulative principle was identified as d-catechin by direct comparison with an authentic sample.
