Magnetic moment measurements of some nuclear levels in155Gd,156Gd and160Dy

Abstract
Magnetic moments of levels in 155Gd, 156Gd and 160Dy have been measured using IPAC and employing the hyperfine field experienced by these nuclei when embedded in ferromagnetic gadolinium metal. The sources were kept at 4K and the external polarizing field was produced by a superconducting coil. The results, expressed in nuclear magnetons, are 0.07+or-0.02 (155Gd; 105 keV), 1.32+or-0.36 (156Gd; 288 keV), 3.14+or-0.40 (156Gd; 1511 keV), 1.48+or-0.60 (160Dy; 284 keV) and 0.32+or-0.14 (160Dy, 966 keV). The result for 155Gd removes an inconsistency in previous measurements and the other results are in good agreement with earlier experiments. The measurements show that perturbed directional correlation measurements may be successfully made for rare earth nuclei which are dissolved in gadolinium metal.
