Improved Rearing System for Pickleworm and Melonworm (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract
A new system for rearing pickleworm, Diaphania nitidalis (Stoll), and melonworm, D. hyalinata (L.), reduces manual labor ca. 85%. Larval diet is poured in large crispers and eggs laid on fiberglass insulation are placed onto the diet surface. Larvae pupate in crumpled paper towels which are removed to holding containers for adult emergence. For rearing pickleworm, a plastic lighting louvre is placed in rearing containers for efficient utilization of diet.
