The Primitive Ascomycete: A New Look at an Old Problem

Abstract
This modification of a hypothetical red algal origin of the Ascomycetes proposes that the transition from marine to terrestrial forms occurred on driftwood. The primitive ascomycete is presumed to have been a pyrenomycete, with 2 -celled ascospores, deliquescent asci, unilocular stromata or perithecia, and without conidia. Evolutionary trends within the Ascomycetes are discussed. The Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Zygomycetes are thought to share a common ancestry and to constitute a division, the Eumycophyta.
