Valence of Eu in EuMo6S8under high pressure

Abstract
It is shown that the valence of Eu in the Chevrel-phase compound EuMo6S8 remains divalent under pressures up to 16 kbar. Thus the possibility of a pressure-induced valence change (Eu2+ to Eu3+) accounting for the observed superconductivity of this compound under pressure must be discounted.
