This paper presents the results of an exploratory ‘locality study’ of the ways in which telematics technologies are involved in the restructuring of one British city–Sheffield. Ten case studies are outlined which attempt to understand the role of telematics networks in the restructuring of the leading indigenous manufacturers and dominating service organizations in the city. This evidence is then synthesized and a critical assessment is made of Sheffield's position within the emerging ‘networked economy’ and the implications of these new technologies for the city's economic development. This evidence is analysed in relation to current debates about globalization, localization and the local–global dynamics of urban economic restructuring. DABINETT G. et GRAHAM S. Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude de voisinage préliminaire qui porte sur les façons dont la télématique influe sur la restructuration d'une grande ville britannique–à savoir, Sheffield. On esquisse dix cas d'étude qui ont pour but de mieux cerner le rôle des réseaux télématiques dans la restructuration des premiers fabricants autochtones et des principales industries de services dans la ville. On fait la synthèse des preuves, et on fait la critique de la situation de Sheffield au sein de l'économie de réseaux nouvelle-naissante et des retombées de ces nouvelles technologies en termes du développement économique de la ville. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die Ergebnisse einer explorativen ‘Gebietsstudie’ der verschiedenen Hinsichten vor, in der Telematiktechnologien in die Umstrukturierung Sheffields, einer englischen Stadt, einbezogen worden sind. Es werden zehn Fallstudien umrissen, die versuchen, die Rolle telematischer Netze bei der Umstrukturierung führender ansässiger hersstellender Betriebe und Dienstleistungsorganisationen in der Stadt zu verstehen. Diese Beweise werden sodann zur Synthese gebracht, und eine kritische Beurteilung der Stellung Sheffields innerhalb der aufkommenden ‘vernetzten Wirtschaft’ und der Implikationen dieser neuen Technologien für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Stadt vorgenommen. Diese Ergebnisse werden in Bezug auf aktuelle Debatten über Globalisierung, Lokalisierung und die lokal-globale Dynamik der städtischen Wirtschaftsumstrukturierung analysiert.
