Abstract
The D1/D2 fluorescence intensity ratios following far-wing excitation of Na-Ar collision pairs are discussed on the basis of the underlying molecular coupling schemes. Thermally averaged optical collision cross sections were obtained within the quantum coupled-channels approach using a new and efficient vectorised scheme in the calculation of their spectral dependences. For the potentials of Duren et al. (1982) excellent agreement with experimental data by Havey et al. (1983) is found. The possibility of obtaining dynamical information from far-wing experiments is illustrated by the behaviour of the D1/D2 ratio in the blue wing of the Na D line. Keywords
