Abstract
Three combinations of intact, thymectonuzed and adrenalecto-mized rats have been studied with the paraabiotic technique. Either both partners of the pairs breat''-ed ambient air or one partner was exposed to hypoxia while the other partner breathed ambient air. Hemoglobin-, hematocrit-, and red blood cell count values were increased in both partners when hypoxia was imposed on 1 parabiont. Adrenalectomy of 1 parabiotic partner was followed by a compensatory hypertrophy of the adrenals left in the co-partner which was higher in degree following exposure to hypoxia. There was a remarkable difference in heart wt. between partners when adrenalectomy was carried out in 1 partner. The heart was smaller in the adrenalectomized partner than in the co-partner, a difference more conspicuous when the non-adrenalectomized partner breathed an 02 deficient gas mixture. Keywords
