Abstract
The rate and extent of P release from A. calcoaceticus was investigated under anaerobic conditions. A. calcoaceticus released phosphate linearly with time when transferred from aerobic to anaerobic conditions. The release rate was in the range of 0.6-1.5 .times. 10-2 mmol P/g dry cells .cntdot. h and .apprx. 4-8% of total cellular P was released during the initial 6 h. It was not observed that anaerobic stress induced the rapid and extensive uptake of phosphate by A. calcoaceticus as far as the cells were pure-cultured in an acetate-rich synthetic medium and not acclimated to an aerobic-anaerobic alternation.
