Abstract
THE presence of S-type hemoglobin in the red blood cell has, in recent years, been demonstrated as the etiologic factor in certain cases of unexplained hematuria. Since Abel and Brown,1 in 1948, showed sickled red corpuscles in sections of a kidney removed because of gross hematuria and a question of a renal tumor, reports by Goodwin et al.,2 Ranney, Larson and McCormack,3 Smith and Conley4 and -thers5 6 7 have proved conclusively that the sole basis of hematuria may be the presence of abnormal hemoglobins. Hematuria has been shown to occur in sickle-cell anemia, sickle-cell trait, sickle-cell hemoglobin C disease, sickle-cell thalassemia . . .Keywords
