Biliary Complications After Hepatic Resection

Abstract
BECAUSE OF recent advances in liver surgery, hepatic resections are more frequently performed, with a reduction in operative mortality rates.1-6 Despite a significant decrease in overall operative morbidity, the rate of biliary complications has not changed.6 Biliary complications remain a common cause of major morbidity after hepatic resection, with an incidence of 4.8% to 7.6% reported in recent large series.2-7 The presence of bile in the dead space after liver resection predisposes to the development of sepsis, which is a well-known cause of liver failure and death.8,9 The purpose of our retrospective study was to identify the risk factors for the development of biliary complications after hepatic resection and to evaluate management in relation to the outcome of these patients.
