Abstract
Various processes for the production of carbon dioxide by microorganisms are presented. It is postulated that a ‘microniche’ developed in a reducing environment; a symbiotic relationship between alga-like organisms and bacterium-like organisms in the ‘microniche’ governed the production of carbon dioxide resulting in the establishment of the steady state carbon dioxide system in the sea.Keywords
