Abstract
Stimulation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) with pokeweed mitogen (PWM) induced consistent increases of intracellular levels of cyclic[c]AMP and cGMP within 15 min. Increases of cAMP were observed in B [bone marrow-derived] and T [thymus-derived] lymphocyte populations, but increase of cGMP was observed only in the B lymphocyte population. The addition of anti-.mu. antibody [Ab] to B cells abolished PWM-induced increase of cGMP without any effect on cAMP response. Anti-.delta. Ab did not show any inhibitory or stimulatory effect on PWM-induced increase of cGMP or cAMP. Pretreatment of B cells with anti-.mu. at 37.degree. C for 1 h inhibited PWM-induced increase of cGMP, whereas pretreatment with anti-.mu. Ab at 4.degree. C did not show any inhibitory effect on PWM-induced increase of cGMP. The effect of anti-.mu.-pretreatment was reversible and pretreated cells were recovered from the inhibitory effect of anti-.mu. Ab after 36 h culture.
