Infrared and Raman spectra of solid and matrix isolated diimide, HNNH

Abstract
Diimide (HNNH) has been prepared as a discharge product of N2H4, and infrared and Raman spectra have been obtained for both solid and matrix isolated HNNH, HNND, and DNND. The five in‐plane vibrations of isolated trans‐HNNH have all been determined: Raman Ag modes, 3128, 1583, and 1529 cm−1; infrared Bu modes, 3131 and 1286 cm−1. Isotopic substitution establishes the characteristic NN stretch as the 1529 cm−1 band. The Au out‐of‐plane torsion was not definitely assigned but could be a weak infrared feature observed at 832 cm−1. cis‐Diimide was not detected. Studies of solid discharge products show that a variety of hydrogen bonded complexes form between HNNH and NH3, and some conclusions are reached regarding the structures of these.
