OBSERVATIONS ON HYPOTENSION FOLLOWING INTRAVENOUS INJECTION OF STRONGLY HYPERTONIC SOLUTIONS MIXED WITH HOMOLOGOUS BLOOD

Abstract
The marked, transient fall in blood pressure which follows intraven. injn. of strongly hypertonic solns. may be increased in intensity and altered in timing by admixture of the hypertonic soln. with blood prior to injn. This phenomenon, seen in anesthetized dogs and rabbits but not in cats, suggests that in some spp. an interaction between hypertonic agents and the blood itself may play an important part in the development of the hypotensive response to injn. of hypertonic solns.
