Abstract
For both spontaneous and induced mutations, traditional methods using whole plants or seeds and tissue culture methods using cells offer the potential for producing useful mutant plants. Tissue culture methods have been completely tested only in tobacco. Application to food crop plants requires (a) cell culture and plant regeneration techniques, (b) selection methods for potentially useful mutant cell types, (c) demonstration that regenerated plants retain mutant traits, and (d) demonstration that mutant traits in regenerated plants are inheritable.
