Abstract
This paper presents a balance theoretical model of brief therapy with families. The model allows the therapist to develop a cognitive map of triadic interaction patterns with a wholeness or completeness which word descriptions alone cannot capture. The relationship structure is mapped through the use of graphs which are then used to plan a specific step-by-step approach to therapy with a particular family. The family is viewed as an interlocking system of interdependent relationships. Case material will illustrate the use of this model in helping to change “stuck” or dysfunctional patterns. Keywords
