Brief therapy with families

Abstract
This paper presents a balance theoretical model of brief therapy with families. The model allows the therapist to develop a cognitive map of triadic interaction patterns with a wholeness or completeness which word descriptions alone cannot capture. The relationship structure is mapped through the use of graphs which are then used to plan a specific step-by-step approach to therapy with a particular family. The family is viewed as an interlocking system of interdependent relationships. Case material will illustrate the use of this model in helping to change “stuck” or dysfunctional patterns.
