Abstract
The actual foods eaten by 21 long-stay patients in 3 Geriatric Units were recorded and were analysed for their nutrient content. The calorie content was lower than the suggested requirement of a sedentary woman but might satisfy the needs of the old women in the sample. Protein and Ca intake were above expectation though slightly lower than the estimated need. The most serious deficiencies were of Fe, vitamins of the B complex, vitamin A and vitamin D. It was concluded that protective foods might well be increased and that there should be further education of younger women regarding the nutritive value of foods, so that good habits might be established earlier in life.
