Abstract
Muscle biopsies were done at repeated intervals during the exptl. periods for the purpose of correlating the electrolyte concn. of muscle tissue with the electrolyte balance data. After suitable control periods, hormonal therapy consisting of thyroid extract, testosterone propionate and desoxycorticosterone was given. These substances were unsuccessful in correcting the serum electrolyte concn. without simultaneously producing edema formation. Deficient amts. of K and increased amts. of Na were found in the biopsy specimens. It was felt that the low osmotic pressure of the plasma (as judged by the electrolyte concn.) was a result of the disordered cellular metabolism which may be seen in a chronic disease process. Keywords
