Abstract
The modified Knott method was used to survey the microfilarial infections in mature dogs at Mobile, Alabama; Jacksonville, Florida; Columbus, Georgia; and Auburn, Alabama. Two morphologically distinct types were observed at each location and identified tentatively as Dirofilaria immitis or Dipetalonema reconditum. Theprev-alence of each species was determined on the basis of animal popula-tion, age, sex, breed, and hair length. The prevalence of one or both species was influenced by each of these factors except hair length. Total microfilarial infections ranged from 34 to 58% among dogs of the 4 locations.
