Abstract
The saturation magnetizations of Ni‐Fe‐Al terminal solid solution alloys have been measured by a force method. Field intensities up to 12.5 kOe were applied and the temperature of the specimens varied from room temperature to 8°K. Average atomic magnetic moments were calculated from values of σ∞,0 which were obtained by customary extrapolation procedures. In the fcc alloy series with constant Ni‐to‐Fe ratios of 4:1, 3:2, and 2:3, the average‐magnetic‐moment‐per‐atom vs Al‐content curves were found to have initial slopes of −2.6, −3.1, and −3.8 μB per atom, respectively. The decrease of the saturation moment in the disordered fcc alloys can be satisfactorily accounted for if the average Ni spin moment in any ternary alloy is assumed to be the same as that of the binary Ni‐Al alloy with the same Al content, and if the average Fe moment is taken to be the same as in a binary Ni‐Fe alloy with the same number of Ni nearest neighbors adjacent to each Fe atom. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
