Abstract
Enhancements above the specific heat of solid alkali-borosilicate glass were observed in the low-temperature specific heat of porous glasses with pore diameters of 22, 37, 60, and 140 Å. The effects are attributed to the presence of low-frequency surface vibrational modes in these glasses. The enhancements are probably controlled by the silica clusters and thus are not directly proportional to the apparent surface area. Since the specific heat of solid glass does not follow the Debye approximation even at lowest temperatures, the semiinfinite calculations of surface specific heat do not apply though rough qualitative agreement is found with experimental enhancements. Keywords
