Abstract
The long‐range R−6 interaction between alkaline earth and noble gas atoms is considered from both classical and quantum‐mechanical viewpoints. Intra‐atomic electron correlation effects are shown to be important for these systems. The relevant van der Waals coefficients are calculated with the use of an accurate, correlated wavefunction in the case of Be and from oscillator strength sum rules for the other alkaline earth atoms. Keywords
