Abstract
Proof is presented that methyl esters of highly unsaturated long chain fatty acids are not significantly altered in chemical structure during gas-liquid chromatography with the stationary phase Apiezon M at 197[degree]. This proof was obtained by study of the chromatographed fatty acid esters by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, as well as the identification of the degradation products after oxidative ozonolysis. Relative retention volumes of C16, C18, C20 and C22 polyenoic acids are listed for two stationary phases, nonpolar Apiezon M and polar Reoplex 400. A system for rapid total analysis of complex fatty acid mixtures on a submilligram scale is described. Keywords
