The Site of Vitamin B12-Intrinsic Factor Complex "Releasing Factor" Activity in the Rat Small Intestine

Abstract
Radioactive vitamin B12 bound to rat gastric intrinsic factor was dialyzed at pH 7.4 and 37[degree]C for 5 hours together with the super-nate of aqueous suspensions of rat small intestinal homogenates. Because supernates from only the proximal 10% of the rat intestine caused radiovitamin to appear in the dialyzate, doubt was cast upon the previously reported (J. Clin. Invest. 39: 199-214, 1960) physiologic role of an intestinal "releasing factor" that is lacking in the mid-portion of the rat intestine where vitamin B12 is principally absorbed.
