Abstract
Chlorothiazide and hydrochlorothiazide, in doses of 20 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg respectively, lowered plasma K levels in the nephrectomized dog in a period of 1 1/2 hours. This reduction averaged 15%. This effect was not seen with similarly injected mercurial diuretics, acetazolamide, or dichlorphenamide. This suggests an extra-renal effect of chlorothiazide derivatives on K not shared by other common diuretic agents. Keywords
