Abstract
Transurethral dilation of the prostate is a simple procedure that can be performed in the outpatient setting with local and topical anesthesia. The entire prostatic urethra must be dilated, but the external sphincter must not. The method is most likely to succeed in patients with moderate symptoms, predominantly lateral lobe obstruction with a gland of less than 40 g, a residual urine volume of less than 150 ml, and normal bladder function.
