Abstract
Describes the application of the variational method to the three-site problem, and shows that the agreement between variational and exact ground state energy is remarkably close, for a wide range of choice of Hamiltonian parameters. As it appears unlikely that exact solutions will be found for realistic intermediate valence systems the indications are that the variational method has considerable potential. Also, the form of the variational wavefunction is conceptually simple. Keywords
