A Study of Bacterial Flora in Swimming Pool Water Treated with High-Free Residual Chlorine

Abstract
Swimming pool waters having 1 ppm of free-Cl residual have a minimal bacterial population regardless of swimming load as determined by membrane filter technics, most surviving organisms were species of Bacillus or Micrococcus. M. epidermidis was the predominant Micrococcus yet never produced more than 4 colonies/100 ml of sample tested. It is believed that less emphasis need be placed on bacterial standards for swimming pool waters having a high free-chlorine residual if accurate titrations of the chlorine residuals are carried out routinely.
