Abstract
High I131 thyroid uptake, low I127 urinary excretion and low PBI [protein bound I] levels were found in goitrous and nongoitrous subjects living in 2 endemic goiter areas of Central and Southern Italy. The I content of drinking water was low. After I administration the I131 uptake and PBI levels became normal. No significant difference was observed between goitrous and nongoitrous subjects. The data suggest the existence of I deficiency in these areas. The KCIO4 and the PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) tests, the thyroxine-binding capacity and the thyroxine-degradation rate were also investigated in some patients. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
