A Respirometric Technique for Evaluating Velopharyngeal Competence During Speech

Abstract
A respirometric procedure for assessing velopharyngeal function during speech production is described. Data are presented for 9 physiologically normal adult speakers producing a variety of speech activities. Indices of velopharyngeal opening determined from the obtained data were found to be significantly lower in speech activity requiring intermittent lowering of the velum. Speech effort level was not found to affect the degree of velopharyngeal opening as indicated by the respirometric index. The respirometric evaluation of velopharyngeal opening may serve as a useful diagnostic tool which is reliable, valid, and practical.
