The Effect of Estrogens on Atherosclerosis

Abstract
Degrees of coronary and aortic atherosclerosis graded on 1 to 3+ scale from autopsy protocols were compared in two groups of men with carcinoma of the prostate, one untreated and the other treated with estrogens. Significantly less atherosclerosis was found in the estrogen-treated group, but the severity of coronary lesions seemed to be more profoundly affected than the severity of aortic lesions. Orchiectomy did not affect the degree of atherosclerosis nor did it augment the effect of estrogen therapy. This study adds further support to the thesis that atherosclerosis in man is a reversible process.
