Optical Spectra of Trivalent Iron in Trigonal Fields

Abstract
The energy levels of Fe3+ in Al2 O3 have been calculated. The eigenvalues were obtained by first calculating the matrix elements in the single-electron representation and then transforming the matrices into the LS representation. The resulting matrices were then diagonalized. The value of the crystalline field parameter Dq and the positions of the energy levels are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results of McClure.
