Abstract
A medium was devised for detecting urease activity of organisms unable to utilize ammonia as a sole source of N. This medium consisted of 0.1% peptone, 0.5% NaCI, 0.2% monopotassium phosphate, 0.0012% phenol red, 0.1% glucose, 2% urea and 2% agar. An intense red-violet color indicates urea decomposition. This medium showed that, in addition to Proteus, paracolon Aerobacter and paracolon intermediates were urease-positive. Paracolon Escher-ichia, Salmonella and Shigella spp. were urease-negative.
