Electro-optical properties of a nonlinear dye in poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(α-methyl styrene)

Abstract
The dye N,N-dihexyl-4-amino-4′-nitrostilbene is incorporated into two polymers. Electro-optical effects in highly viscous solutions and polymer blocks poled by an external electric field are studied. Poly-(α-methyl styrene) can be poled by the application of relatively weak electric fields, and with the incorporated dye a linear electro-optical effect is achieved. The relaxation time of birefringence in highly viscous solutions is investigated.
