Abstract
A long lasting desensitizatlon Is regularly achieved In guinea pigs showing a delayed-type hypersensitivity to neoarsphenamine (NEO) when a massive (60 mg/kg) intravenous injection of NEO is followed shortly by by an Intradermal injection of the same allergen. Desensitized animals have remained unresponsive for periods of up to 71 weeks. Intravenous injection of NEO alone or combined with an intradermal injection performed more than 24 hr. after the intravenous injection causes only a temporary inhibition, as observed in other systems involving antigens Inducing contact or tuberculin-type hyper sensitivity. The desensitizing effect is immunologically specific and may be exerted by cross-reacting arsenicals. However, the intradermal injection of complete Freund''s adjuvant combined with intravenous NEO injection has also some desensitizing effect. Keywords
