Transplantable Tumors off the Syrian Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus)234

Abstract
The biological behavior and morphological features of 8 transplantable tumors of the Syrian golden hamster are described. Included are a 20-carcinoma of the breast, an N-2-methylcholanthrene-induced adenofluorenylacetamide induced bile-duct carcinoma, and a cellular blue nevus-like melanotic tumor induced by the cutaneous application of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Five additional neoplasms, a plasmacytoma, a fibromyxosarcoma, a malignant neurilemmoma, a cutaneous adnexal cystadenocarcinoma, and a malignant hemangiopericytoma, occurred either in untreated controls or as single incidents in carcinogenic studies where no causal relationship could be established. Instances of transplantable hemangiopericytoma, adenocarcinoma of the breast, and cutaneous adnexal cystadenocarcinoma have not been reported previously in hamsters.
