Abstract
The mechanism underlying the negative N‐balance provoked by immobilizing bed rest has been studied by means of excretion data for N15 after administration of N15‐labelled glycine to human subjects under normal conditions (N‐equilibrium) and during immobilization (negative N‐balance). The results seem to indicate that the negative N‐balance during immobilization is primarily based upon a reduced synthesis of tissue proteins, while the rate of breakdown of these proteins is unchanged. Keywords
