Abstract
Examination of the recent literature pertaining to the various Gram-negative pleomorphic organisms reveals the following trends: (1) species formerly thought to be confined to animals are being reported with increasing frequency in man, with a wider spectrum of clinical disease states, and (2) the frequency with which a given species is identified is often proportional to the awareness and interest of the laboratory in the organism. As an aid in identification, specific procedures are recommended. A case of bacterial endocarditis due to Hemophilus aphrophilus is reported.
