Abstract
We compute the p¯p multiplicity distributions, both for nondiffractive and for inelastic events, in the framework of the dual parton model. The first six normalized moments =〈〉/〈N are directly computed from these distributions. We consider several energies and several rapidity intervals. At the same values of z=N/〈N〉, the high-multiplicity tail of the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen curve exhibits a milder energy dependence in a central rapidity interval ‖y‖≤1.3 than in the whole rapidity region. However, the energy dependence of the moments is larger in the former interval than in the latter. We argue that all these features are in agreement with existing data, although the last result, which is a crucial prediction of the dual parton model, is waiting for a direct confirmation from collider data.
