Prolongation of Consciousness in Anoxia of High Altitude by Glucose.

Abstract
The effects of the preflight ingestion of single doses of glucose or vit. C on the duration of consciousness in high altitude anoxia were tested on both flying and ground personnel exposed to anoxia in the altitude chamber. Glucose and vit. C dissolved in water were administered in 80 g. and 1 g. quantities, respectively. Glucose produced a significant increase in the duration of consciousness at 27,000 and 30,000 ft. The protection afforded flying personnel by the glucose soln. was greater 30-50 mins. following its admn. than after an interval of 60-80 mins. At 27,000 ft., the mean duration of consciousness was increased by approx. 40%, or more than one min., by the preflight ingestion of glucose soln. Vit. C, either alone or in conjunction with glucose, had no demonstrable effect on the duration of consciousness.
