Abstract
Studies of oxidative activity and oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria from root tissues of pea seedlings revealed high respiratory rates with succinate, [alpha]-ketoglutarate, and L-glutamate. Mitochondria showed respiratory control ratios of 2-3, and ADP/O ratios of 1 with succinate and 2 with glutamate. P/O ratios were also measured. The oxidation of L-glutamate was stereo-specific and followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Studies with arsenite and values for R.Q. indicate that conversion to [alpha]-ketoglutarate via glutamic dehydrogenase is the initial reaction in glutamate oxidation. This publication has 13 references indexed in Scilit:
