Gastric Secretion of Acid and Urinary Excretion of Histamine in Dogs with Portacaval Transposition

Abstract
A study was attempted to define the pattern of gastric secretion in dogs with portacaval transposition and to explore the possibility that histamine is concerned with the gastric hypersecretion observed in such dogs. Female dogs with separated gastric (corpus) pouches were used. Urinary and gastric secretions were collected during periods of fasting, after the ingestion of a meal of meat, and after the injection of histamine. The experiments indicated that increased quantities of circulating histaminewere not the cause of the increased secretion of acid after portacaval transposition. An increase in the responsiveness of the gastric mucosa was demonstrated and is suggested as a possible cause of the hypersecretion.Keywords
