Abstract
A two-dimensional formulation is presented for holographic recording in thin photorefractive films. The corresponding rate equations take into account two components (parallel and perpendicular) of both fields and current densities. The role of volume- and surface-charge gratings in determining the space-charge field profiles is stressed. As an illustration of the new approach, some features of the short-time solution of the rate equations are discussed for both parallel and perpendicular geometries. The influence of relevant physical and geometrical parameters of the films is investigated. Finally, further extensions of the work to include steady-state and full transient solutions are pointed out. Keywords
