Abstract
In order to elucidate the properties of fetal hemoglobin, the foUowing physicochemical and functional characteristics of hybrids of adult and cord blood hemolysate were studied: ultraviolet spectrum; the course of denaturation by alkalis, acid and heat; oxidation with sodium nitrite and potassium ferrocyanide. The results indicate that by comparison the characteristics of the hybrids can be identified as those of the pairs in the chain. The gamma-chain hybrid behaves qualitatively like fetal hemoglobin in all tests except heat denaturation. As the P -chain hybrids of HbA and HbF behave identically, the identity of the a-chains of the 2 hemoglobins is confirmed functionally. Keywords
