Abstract
The authors introduced a simple method for the detection of N-acetyl isoniazid in urine. This method detects N-acetyl INH in concentrations of 5-7 mcg/ml when tested in water. It is specific for N-acetyl INH as other antituberculous drugs do not give this reaction. Two independent field trials were conducted using urine specimens from tuberculosis sanatoria, general, mental and obstetric hospitals. In these trials the drop test proved to be specific and reliable in a total of 2073 specimens. Taking into consideration that the negative urines were received from patients taking a large variety of drugs in different hospitals, the chances of obtaining false positive results in domiciliary treatment of tuberculosis are relatively small. During this investigation a number of compounds were tested for false positive reactions. Among these only Vitamin K under acid conditions and 8-hydroxyquinoline as well as Vioform gave trace positive reactions. Keywords
