Abstract
This paper describes an attempt to introduce to secondary school mathematics teachers a modern philosophy of applied mathematics. This was done by presenting them with a collection of open problems covering a wide field, some of which are quoted here in full. Each group of teachers then chose a problem to work on and discussed possible mathematical models of the situation and, in some cases, solution by computer simulation. Keywords
