Measurement of theα-Particle Spectrum Resulting fromπCapture inC12

Abstract
We have detected and identified charged particles with an energy of more than 0.5 MeV that were emitted by a carbon target following the absorption of stopped negative pions. Particles of mass 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 were found. The energy spectrum of the α particles was measured from 0.5 to 30 MeV. The rate for the emission of α's integrated over all energies above 0.5 MeV was found to be 1.00 ± 0.07 α/pion.
