Abstract
A method for producing tourniquet shock in rats which yields graded and reproducible results is described. The % survival of rats was progressively decreased as the time of tourniquet application was increased. After 31/2 hrs. of tourniquets 100% of the rats survived, while after 4 hrs. only 3% survived. Rats which had tourniquets applied for 4 hrs. with periods of release for 1-6 hrs., followed by a 2d period of tourniquet application, showed 100% in contrast to 3% survival for those without replacement; 87.5% survived when the tourniquets were replaced after 7 hrs. Increases in Hb concn. of rats in tourniquet shock varied between 27 and 52%.Keywords
