Abstract
Bicoeca crystallina Skuja is recorded from 10 Danish localities and details of its ecology are briefly discussed. Flagella and lorica have been examined by means of electron microscopy. The posteriorly directed flagellum is smooth and the anteriorly directed one is a typical Flimmer flagellum. The lorica has spiral organisation, consisting of interwoven fibrils. The fibrillar pattern is described and a hypothesis of its formation is advanced. It is concluded that the Bicoecales should be placed in a separate class near the Chrysophyceae. It is shown that two lorica types probably exist in the genus, of spiral and annular structure respectively. Keywords
